Allergy Eyes

How are you eyes feeling this spring?  Are they itchy, red and watery?  Are you not able to wear your contact lenses due to  the discomfort?  Living in Kentucky allergies are very common so don’t feel like you are alone, up to 50% of the US population suffers from allergy.  Even more concerning to us as eye doctors is that as many as 75% of allergy sufferers also have eye symptoms.  These can range anywhere from the occasional itch on a high pollen day to chronic painful itching that interferes with our daily routine.  Did you know that your eye doctor can be the best resource for managing these symptoms to help you keep nice white, comfortable, clear eyes.  Unfortunately too often people choose to just try and ignore their symptoms thinking nothing can be done.  Those who just go to the pharmacy and try over the counter medications can actually make things worse if they choose the wrong drop.  Did you know that Visine can make your eyes red?  The active ingredient to get the red out is actually designed to constrict the blood vessels.  Over-use of these types of medications can cause the blood vessels to have the opposite reaction and dilate making the eye appear more red.  Other eye allergy drops that are over the counter only have a duration of 4 to 6 hours so to get continual relief you have to use them 4 times a day, which can be a major inconvenience.  So what is the best way to find allergy relief?  This is where a quick trip to the eye doctor can come in very helpful.  In most cases a trip to the optometrist to find out about your allergies is actually covered by your medical insurance so you don’t have to have vision coverage to get this examined.  With an exam we can see just how bad your allergies are and prescribe medications to help make the eyes feel better and see better.  In most cases for the typical “seasonal” allergy we can get relief with as little as 1 drop a day, making it much easier and convenient than over the counter medication.  For the contact lens wearer in most cases we can treat the itch and get you more comfortable without having to discontinue contact lens wear.  With more severe cases it can take a combination of treatments, something that over the counter medication could never equal.  If your eyes are suffering don’t take it for any longer than you have to, call for an appointment today and get the relief you are looking for.
